Sensory School

The Abilities Center is offering an intensive ten-week family-training program that is filled with many fun opportunities for interactive learning and tools to help your child learn through play. It is a ten-week, sensory-based program that will enrich your child's academic experiences and success.

The mission of this program is to partner with families to maximize and promote your child's overall independence and function. The therapist will identify and provide information relevant to your child's needs. Using this approach, your child's development and academic learning will be enhanced.

Sensory School

It is important to note that learning not only occurs in your head, but through the entire body. The body's senses play an active role in feeding our brain environmental information, which facilitates learning. In the book, The Out of Sync Child, author Carol Kranowitz states, "To do their job well-so that we respond appropriately-the senses must work together. Together, they provide a well balanced diet for the brain. A brain that is nourished with many sensations operates well, and when our brain operates smoothly, so do we."

By providing an opportunity for families to learn this ten-step approach, a child's life is impacted multiple times everyday, as the family carries out the treatment strategies using the tools learned and modeled during the weekly session.

Sensory School includes:

  • Initial functional assessment and sensory screening to determine child's needs.
  • Weekly, one to one sessions with family, child and therapist
  • Sensory diet.
  • Weekly instruction to family in each sensory system with family-friendly curriculum, strategies, treatment focused on that particular sensory system, at-home data sheets and review of the previous week's sensory system.
  • Supplemental handouts.
  • Time for questions and answers.
  • Review of child's progress.
  • At-home program incorporating all sensory systems, specific to child.
  • Opportunity for family-led treatment session with therapist providing direction and modeling.
